Preparing for a game requires thought and dedication. Players have spent hours during the week, practicing moves, getting fit and devising strategies to beat their opposition. The least the referee can do is to prepare with the same dedication.

Every year SA Rugby produces a local version of the World Rugby Law Book. While the Laws are no different the local edition includes a number of additional regulations applicable to our situation such as primary school variations, playing times for school games and a schools’ Code of Conduct.

It is never good news if an incident occurs in a game. Rugby by its very nature is a physical game and can result in players, school or club officials, or spectators behaving badly.
If this happens and a match official needs to act, it’s extremely important that this is recorded and submitted to the Society for further action. If you do not do this, the chances are strong that the player/club/school/spectator will only do it again.

Disciplinary review for 2019
There were 97 cases heard by the Western Province Rugby Union Disciplinary Committee during 2019. The outcomes ranged from non-guilty verdicts to players receiving lifetime bans from the game.
More than 30 players received bans of varying lengths for the 2019 season, another 10 for the 2020 season, three through to 2021 and four banned for five years or longer.
Two coaches received fines for their behaviour. Perhaps the most concerning statistic is the number of clubs that received fines – 17 clubs received fines, ranging from R250 for a minor transgression and topping out at a massive R5 000 to one club.
One of the biggest obstacles to recruiting and retaining match officials is the abuse that is dished out to them at games. The Society appreciates the efforts the Union goes to to try and stamp out this scourge.
