Western Province Rugby Referees’ Society is the oldest of its kind – it was the first to be established when the different racially-based organisations came together in 1992. Since then WPRRS has established an enviable reputation for developing a host of referees, many of them achieving important ‘firsts’ in the history of refereeing in the modern era. In fact, of the 27 referees on SARU’s National Panel seven hail from Western Province – six of these have refereed Test matches – as well as two of the four South African contingent on the Super Rugby Panel for 2020.
